A decade ago this article would have fit on a single page. In 2026, women have access to almost every entry into the Indian Armed Forces — combat, technical, medical, education, logistics and aviation. Here''s the full map I share with girls and parents who walk into our counselling room.
Officer entries open to women #
1. National Defence Academy (NDA) #
- Age: 16.5 – 19.5
- Eligibility: 10+2 (Army wing); PCM for Air Force / Navy
- Selection: UPSC written + 5-day SSB + medical
- Training: 3 years NDA + 1 year service academy
- Vacancies: ~30 seats per cycle (growing every year)
2. Combined Defence Services (CDS) #
- Age: 19 – 25
- Eligibility: Graduation (engineering for IMA/INA wings)
- Selection: UPSC written + SSB
- Path: OTA Chennai (Short Service Commission), now with PC pathway
3. AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) #
- Age: 20 – 24 (Flying); 20 – 26 (Ground Duty)
- Eligibility: Graduation (PCM for Flying & Tech)
- Path: Flying / Ground Duty (Tech / Non-Tech) branches at AFA Hyderabad
4. Indian Army TES (Technical Entry Scheme) #
- Now open to women PCM aspirants from select cycles. 5-year B.Tech + commission at CME Pune or MCEME Secunderabad.
5. Military Nursing Service (MNS) #
- Age: 17 – 25
- Eligibility: 10+2 with PCB ≥ 50%, English compulsory
- Selection: Written + interview + medical
- Training: 4-year B.Sc Nursing at College of Nursing, AFMC Pune (and other centres)
- Career: Direct commission as Lieutenant in MNS
Sailor and soldier entries open to women #
Agniveer (Army, Navy, Air Force) #
- Women now eligible for select trades — Military Police, Naval Sailor, Air Warrior (Auto/Mech)
- Age: 17.5 – 21
- Selection: CEE + PFT + medical
CAPF & State Police #
- BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and Assam Rifles all recruit women constables and Sub-Inspectors
Indian Coast Guard #
- Navik (GD) and Officer entries (Assistant Commandant) open to women
Counsellor''s decision tree #
- Class 11–12 PCB student? → MNS is the highest-ROI women''s entry. Direct commission, free education, ₹56,100 stipend during training.
- Class 12 PCM student? → NDA or TES (if PCM ≥ 60%).
- Graduate (engineering)? → CDS (IMA/INA) + AFCAT (Tech) in parallel.
- Graduate (any)? → CDS (OTA) + AFCAT (Ground Duty) in parallel.
- 10th or 12th, want quick entry? → Agniveer in your preferred service.
What changes physically and mentally #
- Physical standards are gender-specific but rigorous — 1.6 km in 8:30 (CAPF), 800 m in 4 min (Assam Rifles), 1.6 km in 7 min (Navy).
- Mental conditioning is identical to male candidates — SSB tests OLQs without gender weighting.
- Postings include forward areas, ships and squadrons. Family accommodation and crèche facilities have improved significantly.

- Dedicated female PT instructors for Coast Guard, CAPF, Agniveer and Navy candidates
- All-female SSB simulation cohorts on request
- A resident MNS-coaching cohort at Cherthala that has produced selected nursing officers in 3 of the last 4 years
