Every year I sit across the table from Class 12 Physics-Chemistry-Maths students who ask the same question: "Sir, NDA or TES — which one should I prepare for?"
The right answer depends on three things — your age, your PCM score and your appetite for a written exam vs an interview. Let me break it down the way I''d break it down to my own son.

When NDA is the better bet #
- You''re strong in Maths and General Knowledge and enjoy timed written exams.
- You''re comfortable with a broader degree (the Army wing is now a 3-year B.Tech but options are limited).
- You want to start commission one year earlier.
- You can write the NDA written and clear the cutoff (usually 350–360 / 900 with 25%+ in each subject).
When TES is the better bet #
- Your PCM aggregate is comfortably above 70% and you have a decent JEE Main percentile.
- You don''t want to write another competitive exam beyond JEE Main and 12th boards.
- You want a B.Tech from a top military engineering college (CME, MCTE, MCEME) — fully sponsored, with stipend.
- You prefer the engineering officer''s career path — Corps of Engineers, Signals or EME.
What both routes share #
- 5-day SSB Interview at Bhopal, Bangalore, Allahabad or Kapurthala.
- Same medical and physical standards.
- Lieutenant''s pay (Pay Level-10) on commissioning, plus military service pay and allowances.
- Permanent commission with full pension benefits.
The career counsellor''s recommendation #
If a student has 70%+ in PCM, a JEE Main attempt and clear interest in engineering, I always recommend preparing for both NDA and TES in parallel — same SSB skills, same medical, same physical training. That way the boy or girl gets two attempts in a single year instead of one.
If PCM is in the 50–65% range and the student is a strong general-knowledge reader, focus on NDA + AFCAT (after graduation as a backup).
