Why the SSB feels mysterious #

Most candidates walk into Bhopal, Bangalore, Allahabad or Kapurthala thinking the SSB is about luck, looks or accent. It is not. The SSB is a psychometric assessment built around 15 well-defined Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs). Once you understand them, the entire 5-day process becomes a checklist you can rehearse against.

The 15 OLQs (grouped) #

Factor 1 — Planning & Organising #

  1. Effective Intelligence — solving real problems quickly
  2. Reasoning Ability — thinking through cause and effect
  3. Organising Ability — structuring resources to hit a goal
  4. Power of Expression — communicating clearly under stress

Factor 2 — Social Adjustment #

  1. Social Adaptability — fitting any group, any setting
  2. Cooperation — working with people, not around them
  3. Sense of Responsibility — owning outcomes

Factor 3 — Social Effectiveness #

  1. Initiative — moving without being told
  2. Self-Confidence — calm under pressure
  3. Speed of Decision — choosing fast and standing by it
  4. Ability to Influence the Group — leading without bullying
  5. Liveliness — bringing energy, not gloom

Factor 4 — Dynamic #

  1. Determination — finishing what you start
  2. Courage — physical and moral
  3. Stamina — sustaining effort over the full day

Where each OLQ is tested #

Stage OLQs assessed
Screening (PPDT) 1, 2, 4, 11
Psychology (TAT/WAT/SRT/SD) 1, 7, 8, 13
GTO (GD/PGT/HGT/Command Task) 6, 8, 11, 14
Personal Interview All 15
Conference Summary judgement

The single biggest mistake #

Faking. SSB assessors are trained to spot performances — they cross-check what you write in WAT/SRT against what you say in the personal interview. Be your authentic best self.

How SCFE prepares you #

Our SSB Interview coaching is run by ex-assessors and serving officers across all five days. The framework: identify your weakest 3 OLQs, rebuild them through targeted exercises, then practise the full 5-day cycle in residential mode.

Final word #

The SSB is not a test of who you can pretend to be — it is a test of who you already are. Spend 4 weeks with us and you will walk into the board knowing exactly which version of yourself to bring.
