Kerala Defence Aspirants: A 10-Year Roadmap From Class 9 to Officer Commission

Many parents in Kerala come to SCFE asking, "My son is in Class 9 and wants to join the Army. What should we do now?" The honest answer is: the next 10 years matter more than the last 10 months before any exam. Here''s the roadmap I draw out on the whiteboard.

Class 9 — Build the base #

  • Maintain 70%+ in school with strong English and Maths
  • Read the newspaper daily — start with The Hindu''s editorial
  • Begin a basic running habit: 3 km, 4 days a week
  • Consider applying for Sainik School Class 9 (AISSEE) if school change is feasible
  • Start basic SSB awareness — read SSB OLQs

Class 10 — Keep options open #

  • Score 80%+ in 10th — many entries (RIMC, Rashtriya Military School) need this
  • Decide stream: PCM/PCMB keeps every officer entry open
  • Increase running to 4 km, add push-ups and pull-ups
  • Watch one defence documentary or biography per month

Class 11–12 — The decision point #

  • PCM students: prepare for NDA written + JEE Main (TES backup)
  • PCB girls: focus on MNS — 50%+ in PCB unlocks the entry
  • Maintain board score above 60% PCM/PCB
  • Run 1.6 km in under 8 minutes by end of Class 12
  • Take a 5-day residential SSB workshop at SCFE during summer break

Year 1 of college — The first attempts #

  • Continue NDA attempts till age 19.5
  • Take the AFCAT (eligible from final year of graduation)
  • Stay academically strong — CDS needs graduation
  • Add weekend coaching for English communication and current affairs
  • If selected at NDA, your roadmap pivots to academy life

Years 2–3 of college — Lock in CDS / AFCAT #

  • Take CDS in your final year (Combined Defence Services Examination)
  • Take AFCAT twice a year
  • Take CAPF AC (UPSC) as a backup for paramilitary officer commission
  • Build SSB-grade fitness: 5 km in 24 min, 30 push-ups, 12 pull-ups
  • Choose your service preference based on SSB experience

Year of commission — Service academy #

  • IMA Dehradun (Army) / INA Ezhimala (Navy) / AFA Hyderabad (Air Force) / OTA Chennai (SSC)
  • 12–18 months of training depending on entry
  • Commissioned as Lieutenant / Sub-Lieutenant / Flying Officer at age 22–24

Why a 10-year view matters #

Every year I see talented Kerala students fail not because they were weak, but because they began 6 months before NDA instead of 6 years. SSB looks for personality patterns built over time — leadership in school, sports, debate, NCC, social service. None of these can be faked in a crash course.

How SCFE supports the long-game aspirant #

  • Junior Defence Programme for Class 9–10 students (weekend batch)
  • Foundation Programme for Class 11–12 (NDA + JEE / NEET parallel track)
  • Officer Track for graduates (CDS + AFCAT + CAPF AC)
  • 5-day residential SSB simulation every quarter
  • Hostel + mess at Cherthala for outstation students
