Career After Graduation: Defence, Government Job or Private Sector?
If you''re in your final year of college and feeling overwhelmed by CDS, AFCAT, SSC CGL, IBPS PO, GATE, MBA entrance and corporate placements all happening in the same six months โ you''re not alone. Most of the students who walk into our counselling room are facing the same paralysis.
Here''s the decision tree we use at SCFE Academy.
Step 1: Define what you want most #
Pick the single most important factor:
- A. Service and uniform โ Defence officer entries
- B. Stable government job with predictable transfers โ SSC, banking, state PSC
- C. High starting salary, fast career growth โ Private sector, IT, consulting
- D. Specialisation through higher studies โ GATE, MBA, MS abroad
You can change later, but pick one for the next 12โ18 months.
Step 2: Defence officer route #
If you chose A, take all four in parallel:
- CDS (UPSC) โ twice a year, leads to IMA / INA / AFA / OTA
- AFCAT (IAF) โ twice a year, Flying & Ground Duty
- CAPF AC (UPSC) โ paramilitary officer commission
- TGC / SSC Tech (engineers only) โ Army technical entries
Prep load: 6 months structured study + SSB workshops. Backup: SSC CGL.
Step 3: Government job route #
If you chose B, build a 24-month exam calendar:
| Exam | Conducting body | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | SSC | Graduation |
| SSC CHSL | SSC | 12th pass |
| IBPS PO / Clerk | IBPS | Graduation |
| RBI Grade B | RBI | Graduation |
| State PSC | Kerala PSC etc | Varies |
| RRB NTPC | RRB | Graduation |
| LIC AAO | LIC | Graduation |
Prep load: Quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English, current affairs, banking awareness. Common syllabus reduces effort.
Step 4: Private sector route #
If you chose C, optimise final year for placements:
- Build 2 portfolio projects if you''re an engineer
- Get certified โ Microsoft, AWS, Salesforce or Google
- Practice DSA on LeetCode (engineers) or case studies (commerce / management)
- Brush up English communication and group discussion skills
- Apply to off-campus drives parallel to placements
Step 5: Higher studies route #
If you chose D:
- Engineers: GATE โ MTech / PSU jobs (BHEL, IOCL, ONGC)
- Commerce/Arts: CAT / XAT / NMAT for MBA
- Pure science: GRE + research applications abroad
- Bio students: NEET PG (after MBBS), AIIMS PhD
Combining tracks safely #
The smart Indian graduate prepares for two tracks at once:
- Defence + SSC โ same English/GK overlap, different timetables
- Banking + SSC CGL โ quant and reasoning overlap is 70%
- Placements + GATE โ 6 months of real prep covers both
Avoid combining defence and IT placements โ the time conflict is severe.
The salary reality (entry-level, 2026) #
| Path | Starting CTC |
|---|---|
| IT product company | โน8โ18 lakh |
| Bank PO | โน5.5โ7 lakh + perks |
| SSC CGL Inspector | โน5โ6 lakh + perks |
| Defence Lieutenant | โน10โ12 lakh + canteen, accommodation, ration |
| Defence Sailor / Soldier | โน4โ5 lakh + ration, accommodation |
| State PSC clerical | โน3โ4 lakh |
Pension benefits and accommodation often make defence salaries effectively higher than they appear on paper.
